Product Materials, Lubricants, and Care: A Practical Beginner’s Guide
Product care is not the glamorous part of intimate shopping, but it is the part that keeps a good product working, protects the materials, and reduces unpleasant surprises. The manufacturer’s instructions always take priority because products that look similar may use different materials, coatings, motors, adhesives, batteries, or construction methods.
Read the exact material description
Do not rely only on broad phrases such as “soft,” “premium,” or “body safe.” Look for the specific material or material combination. A product may include silicone, glass, metal, ABS plastic, elastomer, rubber, PVC, leather, faux leather, nylon, fabric, adhesives, coatings, or several components that need different care.
Nonporous materials are generally easier to clean thoroughly than porous materials, but construction matters. Seams, charging ports, motors, fabric, electronics, and attached decorations can change what cleaning method is appropriate.
Check lubricant compatibility before use
Lubricants are not universally interchangeable. Water-based, silicone-based, oil-based, hybrid, flavored, warming, and other formulas can behave differently with product materials, condoms, barriers, skin, and cleaning methods.
Read both the product and lubricant directions. When compatibility is unclear, ask the manufacturer or retailer before use. A small patch test on an inconspicuous area may be appropriate when the manufacturer permits it.
Water resistance is not a synonym for indestructible
Terms such as splash-resistant, water-resistant, submersible, and waterproof do not always mean the same thing. Follow the stated limits. Close charging-port covers when provided. Never immerse a product unless the instructions specifically allow it, and do not charge electronics while wet.
Clean before first use and after use
Use the manufacturer’s recommended cleaner, water temperature, and method. Harsh household chemicals, boiling, dishwashers, alcohol, bleach, abrasive scrubbers, or prolonged soaking can damage some products even when another material would tolerate them.
Pay attention to seams, textured areas, attachments, and areas around controls. Rinse when directed and allow the product to dry completely before storage.
Store products thoughtfully
- Keep products clean, dry, and protected from dust, extreme temperature, and direct sunlight.
- Store items separately when materials or dyes may react, transfer, or stick to one another.
- Do not tightly bend cords, straps, or flexible products beyond their intended shape.
- Remove disposable batteries for long-term storage when the instructions recommend it.
- Use the supplied charger or an expressly compatible replacement.
- Keep products, batteries, chargers, packaging, and small parts away from children and pets.
Inspect before and after use
Stop using a product that is cracked, torn, frayed, corroded, swollen, leaking, overheating, developing a persistent odor, or behaving differently from its normal operation. Damage to a coating or surface can make a product more difficult to clean and may expose underlying material.
Personal comfort and health matter
Stop if a product causes pain, numbness, unexpected irritation, bleeding, breathing difficulty, electrical discomfort, or another concerning reaction.
